What Should You Look For in a Pear Shaped Diamond?
Check the outline before you check the grades. A good pear shows no dark bow tie across the middle, rounded shoulders, softly curved wings, a point that sits dead center on the long axis, and two halves that mirror each other. Color, clarity and carat are the easy part, and they come second.
That order is the opposite of how most people shop. They filter to a carat weight and a clarity grade, then pick whichever pear is cheapest inside that filter, and the cheapest one is usually cheap because its outline is off.
A pear is a hybrid: half round brilliant at the top, half marquise running down to the tip. That hybrid outline is cut by hand judgement rather than by a fixed formula, so two pears with identical paperwork can look like different stones.
Put simply, the report tells you what is inside the diamond, and only the video tells you what the diamond looks like.

What Is the Bow Tie Effect in a Pear Diamond?
The bow tie is a dark band that runs across the width of a pear, right through the middle, shaped roughly like a man’s bow tie. It comes from facets that shadow the center of the stone instead of returning light to your eye. Every elongated shape has one to some degree, and what varies is severity.
A faint grey shadow that fills in with light as the stone moves is normal and nobody will ever comment on it. A hard black stripe that stays put through the whole rotation is a dead zone in the middle of your diamond.
Here’s the awkward part: no grading lab measures it. GIA will not mention it, the symmetry grade will not catch it, and a stone with a brutal bow tie can still be graded Excellent polish and Excellent symmetry.
Fact: the bow tie is caused by the depth and angle of the pavilion facets under the widest part of the stone, which is why very deep pears and very shallow pears both tend to show it worst.
To judge it, open the 360° video, stop the stone face-up, then rotate slowly a quarter turn each way. If the dark band breathes and flickers, it’s fine. If it sits there like a smudge of ink, move on.

What Is the Best Length-to-Width Ratio for a Pear?
Length divided by width. Most pears that people actually like fall between 1.45 and 1.75, and the classic silhouette sits around 1.50 to 1.55. Under 1.40 the stone starts to read stubby, and over 1.80 it reads like a needle. Inside that band, ratio is taste rather than quality.
The number is printed on the report, and every serious retailer lets you filter by it.
Here is the part nobody tells you: the difference between 1.52 and 1.58 is invisible on a hand. Nobody at the dinner table is measuring your ratio, and no one has ever noticed a six-point difference in a pear’s proportions. What they notice is the shadow in the middle and whether the tip points straight.
Ratio does one useful job, though. A longer pear covers more of the finger per carat, so if finger coverage is the goal, push toward 1.65 to 1.75 and you get a visibly bigger-looking stone for the same weight.
Tip: shorter, wider pears at 1.45 or so look plumper and more antique; longer pears look sleeker and slim the finger. Both are correct. Pick one, filter to it, then judge everything else on video.
The Four Shape Faults That Ruin a Pear
High shoulders, flat wings, an off-center point, and an uneven belly. Each of these is a shape fault rather than a grading fault, so no lab report will flag any of them, and each one is plain to see in a 360° video. Sort them out first, because a beautifully graded pear with a crooked point still looks crooked.
1. High Shoulders
The shoulders are the two curves at the wide, rounded end. When they are cut too high and too flat, the round end squares off and the stone looks like a shield instead of a pear.
Look at the top of the stone face-up. That curve should be a continuous arc, not a corner.
2. Flat or Bulging Wings
The wings are the two long curves running from the shoulders down to the point. Flat wings pinch the stone into a triangle and make it look thin and mean. Wings that bulge too far out make it look like a plump water droplet with no elegance to it.
The wings should curve out from the belly and taper smoothly. Any straight run of edge is a fault you will see forever.
3. An Off-Center Point
Draw an imaginary line from the middle of the rounded end straight down. The point should land on it. When the tip drifts even slightly to one side, the whole stone looks like it’s leaning, and a jeweler cannot correct it with the setting.
This one is easy to miss on a phone screen and obvious the moment you view the image full size.
4. An Uneven Belly
The belly is the widest part of the stone. Fold the outline in half in your head: the left half should mirror the right half, at the shoulder, at the belly and along both wings.
Asymmetry here is the most common fault we see in cheap pears, and it’s also the most common reason a stone at a tempting price is sitting unsold.
Remember this: all four faults live in the outline, not in the paperwork. A pear that passes all four with an SI1 clarity grade beats a lopsided VVS1 every single time.
Table and Depth Percentages: The Numbers Worth Filtering On
Table 53% to 65%, depth 58% to 68%. That is the window we filter to on pears. Go deeper than that and the carat weight hides in the bottom of the stone, so it faces up smaller than its weight suggests. Go shallower and light leaks straight through the middle, which usually deepens the bow tie.
Add polish and symmetry of Very Good or better and you have removed most of the poorly finished stones from your list in one click.
These are filter guardrails, not guarantees. A pear can sit perfectly inside that window and still show a black bow tie, which is exactly why the video check comes after the filter and not instead of it.

Why Does GIA Not Give Pears a Cut Grade?
Because GIA issues an overall cut grade for round brilliants only. Pears, ovals, marquises, hearts and every other fancy shape receive polish and symmetry grades and nothing more, since the trade has never agreed on one correct set of proportions for a fancy outline. The report grades the finish, not the beauty.
That single fact changes how you shop. On a round, the word “Excellent” on the report does most of the work for you. On a pear, there is no such word, and the work transfers to you.

Some retailers create in-house names for well-cut fancies. Those are marketing grades, not GIA grades, and they mean whatever the retailer decides they mean, useful as a shortlist, never as proof.
So the honest hierarchy for a pear is: video first, proportions second, report third.

Color pools at the point of a pear, so tint shows roughly a grade earlier than it would in a round of the same weight. G or H is a safe stop for white metal, while I and J look excellent in yellow or rose gold. For clarity, where the inclusion sits matters far more than the letter on the report.
Position is everything here. A feather or a crystal tucked under the shoulders disappears behind the facet pattern. The same inclusion sitting under the table, or worse, in the point, is a different diamond entirely.
An inclusion that reaches the surface at the tip is the one clarity issue we treat as a hard no, because the tip is where the stone takes knocks.

The point is the only fragile part of a pear, and a V-shaped prong, often called a chevron prong, wraps it from both sides. Five or six prongs hold the long outline straighter than four. A halo or a bezel protects more still, at the cost of hiding a little of the silhouette you paid for.
Diamond is the hardest material there is, but hardness is not toughness. A thin tip struck at the wrong angle against a door frame can chip, and no amount of clarity grade prevents that.
The second setting issue is rotation. A pear held by too few prongs, or by prongs that don’t grip the shoulders, can twist in its head over the years so the point stops pointing where it should.
Ask for the point to be covered, ask for six prongs on stones above a carat, and the problem is solved at the workshop rather than at the repair counter.

Inspecting a Pear Online: The 30-Second Routine
Open the 360° video full screen and stop it face-up. Look at the middle for a dark band, then check that the point lines up with the center of the round end, then mirror the two wings against each other. Only after the outline passes do you open the certificate.
First step, the bow tie. Rotate a quarter turn each way and watch whether the shadow moves and fills.
Second, the alignment. Hold a finger vertically on the screen through the middle of the rounded end and see whether the tip meets it.
Third, the mirror test on the wings and shoulders, one side against the other.
Last, the report: polish and symmetry at Very Good or better, length-to-width ratio inside your chosen band, and no inclusion plotted at the tip.
That’s the whole test. Thirty seconds a stone, and it removes maybe half of what you were considering.
