What Is Length to Width Ratio in a Diamond?
Length to width ratio is the diamond’s length divided by its width, both taken from the millimeter measurements on the grading report. A 1.00 ratio is perfectly square or perfectly circular in outline. A 1.50 ratio means the stone is half again as long as it is wide, which is what people mean by an “elongated” oval or emerald.
It describes outline only. It says nothing about brilliance, nothing about clarity, and nothing about how much light comes back at you.
A report that reads 8.02 x 5.35 x 3.28 mm gives you 8.02 ÷ 5.35 = 1.50. That is the whole calculation, and every retailer that lists measurements lets you do it in about four seconds.
Tip: most online listings show the ratio already computed in the specs panel, but the millimeters are the source of truth. If the two disagree, trust the report.
What Is the Best Length to Width Ratio for Each Shape?
There is no single best ratio across all shapes. Square-outline shapes want 1.00–1.05, oval and emerald want 1.35–1.50, pear wants 1.45–1.75, and marquise wants 1.85–2.00. Everything below is the buy range and the avoid range for each shape, in the order buyers actually shop them.
1. Round Brilliant
Buy 1.00–1.01, tolerate up to 1.02, avoid anything higher. GIA reports a minimum and a maximum diameter for rounds, and the gap between those two numbers is your ratio.

2. Oval
Buy 1.35–1.50. The workable range runs 1.30–1.55, below 1.30 the stone reads chubby rather than elegant, and above 1.60 it starts looking like a grain of rice in a setting.

3. Emerald Cut
Buy 1.40–1.50 for the classic elongated look. Accept 1.30–1.60. Below 1.30 the stone drifts toward a square emerald, which is a legitimate look but a different one, and it should be bought on purpose rather than by accident.

4. Pear
Buy 1.45–1.75, with 1.55–1.65 as the sweet spot most buyers settle on. Under 1.40 the stone looks squat and the point gets lost; over 1.80 the belly narrows and the shape stops reading as a pear at arm’s length.
With pears, symmetry of the shoulders matters at least as much as the number. Two pears at an identical 1.60 can look completely different if one has high shoulders and the other has flat ones.
5. Marquise
Buy 1.85–2.00. The traditional target is a clean 2.00, anything under 1.75 looks inflated in the middle, and past 2.10 the two points get thin enough to worry about.
Remember this: a marquise at any ratio needs V-prongs over both points. The ratio decides how the stone looks, and the setting decides whether it survives a decade of daily wear.
6. Cushion
Buy 1.00–1.09 for a square cushion and 1.15–1.30 for a rectangular one. The gap between 1.10 and 1.14 is the awkward zone, where the stone looks neither square nor deliberately elongated.
Elongated cushions at 1.35–1.50 have become a real category of their own. They are worth searching for by name, because the standard filters will bury them among the squares.
7. Princess
Buy 1.00–1.05. A princess is meant to be square, and at 1.08 or higher you can see the rectangle from across a table.

8. Asscher
Buy 1.00–1.05, and treat 1.05 as a hard ceiling. The asscher is defined by its square outline and its stepped, hall-of-mirrors interior.
Push the ratio to 1.10 and you have not bought a longer asscher. You have bought a small emerald cut with cropped corners.
9. Radiant
Buy 1.00–1.05 for a square radiant and 1.20–1.35 for a rectangular one. Elongated radiants at 1.40–1.50 are the current favourite, and they wear longer on the finger than their carat weight suggests.

10. Heart
Buy 0.95–1.05, with 1.00 as the target. A heart that is taller than it is wide loses the two lobes that make the shape legible.
Under half a carat, err toward the wider end of that range. A slightly broad heart is far easier to recognise at small sizes, and small hearts that read as “some pointy thing” are the most common complaint we hear about this shape. 11. Trillion, Baguette and the Odd Ones
Trillions want 1.00, since all three sides should read equal. Baguettes and tapered baguettes are not ratio-graded in any meaningful way, and their proportions are chosen to fit the centre stone.

How Does Ratio Change How Big a Diamond Looks?
An elongated stone looks larger than a square one of the same carat weight, because more of its weight sits in surface area you can see from the top. An oval at 1.45 covers noticeably more finger than a round of identical weight. Nothing about the diamond got heavier. The outline just spends the weight differently.
That is the practical argument for pushing toward the top of a shape’s ratio range when your budget is fixed. You get visual size without paying for carats.
There is a limit, though. Past roughly 1.60 on an oval or 1.65 on an emerald, the stone stops looking bigger and starts looking thin, and thin stones look fragile rather than generous.

Where Does Length to Width Ratio Not Matter?
Ratio does not matter within about 0.03 of your target. A 1.42 oval and a 1.45 oval are indistinguishable on a hand, in a photo, and across a dinner table. In twelve years of inspecting stones for readers, we’ve found that nobody has ever spotted a three-hundredths difference without the two reports side by side.
It also does not matter to sparkle. Ratio decides the shape of the outline, while diamond cut quality decides how much light comes back out, and the two are graded and priced separately.
So the anxiety is real and the concern is understandable. It is simply invisible at the precision buyers worry about.
What deserves that attention instead? The table and depth percentages for your shape, because those two numbers move light return in a way you can see in the video, and a badly proportioned depth will dull a stone whose ratio is textbook perfect.
How Do You Use Ratio Inside a Diamond Search Filter?
Set the ratio slider to your shape’s buy range before you touch price, then sort by cut grade, and only then start narrowing color and clarity. Filtering ratio first is what keeps you from falling for a stone you will later find stubby. It costs nothing and removes most of the wrong inventory in one move.
For an oval, that means a slider set to 1.35–1.50 rather than the default full sweep. For a marquise, 1.85–2.00. For a princess or asscher, cap it at 1.05.
Then open the video on every survivor. A filter tells you the outline is right; only the 360-degree video tells you whether the stone has a heavy bow-tie, a dark centre, or a visible inclusion sitting under the table.

Yes, modestly, and only on the elongated shapes. Ovals, pears and emeralds sitting in the fashionable middle of their ranges carry a premium because demand concentrates there, while stones at the stubby or overly thin ends sell at a discount. Round, princess and asscher barely see any ratio effect at all.
That discount is a genuine opportunity if your eye is happy with a 1.28 oval or a 1.62 emerald. You are paying less for a shape that is out of fashion, not for a shape that is defective.
Fact: no grading lab issues a pass or fail on ratio. GIA and AGS report the millimeters and stop there, so any “ideal ratio” claim you read is market convention rather than gemology.
