GIA grades an oval’s color, clarity, polish and symmetry. It does NOT give it a cut grade. That verdict gets handed to you, and most buyers reach it by guessing.

Why Doesn’t GIA Give Oval Diamonds a Cut Grade?

Because the cut grade was built for one shape only. The round brilliant has a narrow, heavily studied set of angles behind it, so light return can be modeled and scored against a standard. Ovals vary in outline and in facet layout from stone to stone, and there is no single ideal to score them against.

So the report stops at polish and symmetry. The cut field stays empty.

That empty field is not a warning about the stone. An oval goes ungraded for cut because of how the grading system was written, not because anyone suspects the diamond.

Fact: GIA has issued cut grades for standard round brilliants only, since 2006. Oval, pear, marquise, cushion, emerald and radiant all leave that line blank, no matter how well they are cut.

AGS Laboratories used to publish light-performance grades on fancy shapes, and it ceased operations in 2022. Retailers fill the gap with in-house standards of their own: Blue Nile’s Astor light-performance standard is the best known of them, and useful as those labels are, none of them is a GIA grade.

So what replaces the grade? A screen you run yourself.

How Do You Judge Oval Diamond Cut Quality?

In three passes. Screen the report numbers to build a shortlist, watch the 360-degree video at maximum zoom to catch what numbers cannot show, then look at a hand or setting shot to see the stone in motion. The report eliminates candidates. The video decides between the ones that survive.

Oval Proportions: The Six Numbers Worth Screening

Six fields on the report do nearly all the work: length-to-width ratio, depth percentage, table percentage, girdle thickness, culet size, and the polish and symmetry pair. Start at 1.35 to 1.50 ratio, 58% to 62% depth, 53% to 63% table, girdle medium to slightly thick, culet None, polish Excellent. Anything outside those windows has to justify itself on video.

1. Length-to-Width Ratio

This one is taste, not quality. Most oval buyers land between 1.35 and 1.50, where the stone reads clearly elongated without looking stretched.

Under about 1.30 an oval starts looking like a fat round that didn’t commit. Over about 1.55 it reads long and narrow, and plenty of people want exactly that, especially in an east-west setting.

Nobody alive will notice 1.41 against 1.44. Pick the outline you like, then stop optimizing a number that only exists on your screen.

One practical note: GIA prints the measurements, not the ratio. Divide the length by the width and you have it.

2. Depth Percentage

58% to 62% is the comfortable window, and a shade either side is not a problem on its own. Above roughly 64%, the oval is carrying weight where you can’t see it, so a stone that weighs a carat looks like a smaller one on the finger.

Below about 56%, light starts escaping through the bottom instead of coming back at you. The center can go glassy, or show a pale ring through the table.

3. Table Percentage

Aim for 53% to 63%. A very large table, somewhere near 68% and up, flattens the crown, and a flat crown gives you less fire, which is the colored flash rather than the white sparkle.

A very small table tends to make the middle of the stone read dark. Between those two, the difference between 57% and 59% is invisible.

4. Girdle Thickness

Medium to slightly thick, with thin and thick both acceptable. Extremely thin is the one to refuse, and in an oval the reason is specific: the two points at either end are the thinnest, most exposed part of the stone, and that is where a knock lands.

Extremely thick sits at the other end of the problem. It’s weight you paid for that shows up as a chalky white outline instead of sparkle.

5. Culet

None. That’s the whole rule.

A culet larger than Very Small can show through the table as a small grey dot at the center of the stone, and once you have seen it, you cannot unsee it.

6. Polish and Symmetry

Excellent polish, and Very Good symmetry at minimum. Symmetry deserves more of your attention in an oval than it does in a round, because an oval has no facet pattern regular enough to hide a lopsided outline.

Remember this: an Excellent symmetry grade still leaves room for an outline that looks slightly off-balance to your eye. Split the video image down the middle and compare halves yourself.

What Does a Proportions Chart Miss?

Nearly everything you will actually see. A chart cannot show you the bow tie, the crispness of the facet pattern, whether the sides look full or flat, or how the stone behaves under moving light. Two ovals can share identical depth, table and ratio, and one looks watery while the other snaps.

The bow tie is the big one. It’s a dark band running across the width of the stone, caused by the pavilion facets shadowing your own head and hands back at you rather than returning light.

Every oval has some bow tie. The question is what kind.

A soft grey blur that moves and breaks up as the stone rotates is normal and honestly rather pretty. A hard black band that sits in the same place no matter how the diamond turns is a stone to pass on, and the report will happily call it Excellent polish, Excellent symmetry while it does so. Facet layout varies too. Some ovals are cut with long, narrow pavilion mains that widen the bow tie, and nothing on the report tells you which layout you’re looking at.

How Should You Watch the 360-Degree Video?

In four passes, at maximum zoom, on the biggest screen you own, never on a phone. First face-up and still, hunting for the dark band. Then rotating slowly, for outline symmetry. Then tilted, to check that light comes back across the whole face. Last in profile, for girdle and bulge.

Pass one: stop the video face-up and look only at the center third. If a black band occupies it, you’re done with that stone.

Pass two: rotate slowly and watch the outline. You’re checking whether the two shoulders match and whether the tips sit level, and a slow rotation exposes a lopsided stone far faster than a still photo does.

Pass three: tilt the stone and watch the ends. Ovals often go dim at the tips before the center goes, so a stone that keeps returning light at both points is doing something right.

Pass four: view it from the side. A very deep oval looks obviously bottom-heavy in profile, and that is the fastest sanity check on a depth number you weren’t sure about.

Buy from a seller that gives you three things: a lab report you can look up independently, high-zoom 360-degree video of the exact stone rather than a stock photo, and a return window long enough to see the diamond in daylight. Without video, you are buying a fancy shape blind. An oval is the shape that punishes that hardest.
