Cross one of those marks and the price per carat steps up across the whole stone, not just across the extra weight you gained. That step is a cliff, and you are allowed to stand on the cheap side of it.

A cutter holding rough that will finish at 0.96 carats faces a decision, and the money argues for pushing to the round number, even if that means leaving the pavilion a shade deep or the girdle a shade thick. 1. The 0.90ct to 0.99ct Window
Every weight from 0.90 to 0.99 prices below the 1.00ct bracket, which is why this window is the most useful of the three for engagement ring shoppers.
A 0.99ct round is one point short of the magic mark and spreads across the finger like a full carat. A 0.90ct round gives up roughly 0.2mm of diameter for the deepest discount in the band.
Tip: if the mm measurement matters more to you, shop 0.95 to 0.99; if the price matters more, shop 0.90 to 0.92. Both live below the wall.
2. The 1.45ct to 1.49ct Window

Remember this: the cliff is a pricing convention, not a quality boundary. There is no gemological difference of any kind between 0.99 and 1.00, or between 1.99 and 2.00.
Millimeters, Not Carats: What Your Eye Actually Sees
Diameter grows as the cube root of weight, so cutting 10% of the carat weight costs you only about 3.4% of the diameter and under 7% of the face-up area. On a round brilliant that is roughly two tenths of a millimeter. You cannot judge two tenths of a millimeter without laying a second stone beside the first one.
The weight difference is real, and the number printed on the report is real. Neither is visible at conversational distance.
So redirect the anxiety. What people notice across a dinner table is light, how the stone flashes when the hand moves, and light comes from cut, not from the last 0.10ct of weight.

The first is the common one, and it is easy to catch.
