Why Do Brilliant Cuts Hide Inclusions and Step Cuts Show Them?
Brilliant cuts use triangular and kite-shaped facets radiating out from the center, which throw light back in many directions at once. Step cuts use long parallel facets running like stair steps around a broad flat table, so light returns in wide, calm flashes. Busy pattern conceals. Calm mirror reveals.
Think of it as trying to spot a coin at the bottom of a rippling pool versus a still one. The ripples do the hiding.

What Does “Eye Clean” Actually Mean?
Eye clean means no inclusion is visible to the unaided eye when the diamond is viewed face-up at normal distance, roughly 10 to 12 inches, in ordinary daylight. It is not a GIA grade and it is never printed on a certificate. Two SI1 stones with matching reports can differ completely.
That last point is the one buyers get wrong. Clarity grades are assigned under 10x magnification with a loupe, not at arm’s length.
So the grade tells you how much is in there. It does not tell you whether you will see it.
Which brings up something that genuinely does not matter: the step from VS1 up to VVS2 inside a brilliant shape. Both are invisible without magnification, both look identical face-up, and the price gap buys you a nicer line on paper and nothing else. Brilliant shapes hold eye-clean down to SI1 in the sizes most readers buy, roughly 1ct to 1.5ct. Elongated brilliants sit half a step behind, so VS2 becomes the safer floor once you pass about 1.5ct. Step cuts start at VS2 and want VS1 as they grow. Here is each shape.

SI1 is the honest floor, and under 1ct a carefully chosen SI2 frequently gets there too. No other shape is this forgiving. One exception holds firm: a dark crystal parked dead center under the table is NOT something a facet pattern can rescue.

6. Pear, SI1 small, VS2 larger
The rounded end behaves like a brilliant and hides well. The point does not. Anything sitting near that tip is both more visible and more fragile, so reject it regardless of the grade letter.
7. Marquise: VS2
Long, shallow, wide-tabled and tipped at both ends, the marquise is, how can we say that, the least forgiving member of the brilliant family. VS2 is the sensible floor. SI1 marquise stones can be eye clean, but the hit rate is low enough that you will spend real time hunting.
8. Heart: SI1

The Asscher’s X-shaped facet pattern gives it a little more visual clutter than an emerald, and only a little. Treat VS2 as the floor and step up to VS1 above 1.5ct. Cloudy inclusions are the specific enemy here, because they flatten the whole hall-of-mirrors effect.

An emerald cut needs VS2 or better because its wide table and parallel step facets return light in broad, even sheets that give inclusions nowhere to hide. At VS2, inclusions are typically small and set away from the center. At SI1, they are usually large enough or central enough to catch the eye face-up.
Simply put, the emerald cut trades sparkle for clarity of vision. You are buying a window, so the thing behind the window has to be clean.
There is a real exception worth knowing. A white feather tucked near the girdle can leave an SI1 emerald perfectly eye clean, while a grey cloud across the table can wreck a VS2.

Weight changes everything, because a larger diamond has larger facets and a wider table. The same inclusion that vanishes in a 0.7ct round becomes a visible speck in a 2.5ct one. As a working rule: under 1ct you can drop one grade, from 1ct to 2ct hold your shape’s floor, and above 2ct add one grade back.

How Should You Inspect a Diamond for Eye-Cleanliness Online?
Play the 360-degree video at full magnification and find every inclusion first. Then shrink the video window down to roughly the stone’s real size, look again from normal reading distance, and see what survives. Anything you cannot find at that scale will not be visible on a finger either.
Magnified video is a stress test, not a preview. A 40x view of an SI1 looks alarming and tells you almost nothing about the face-up appearance.
